The mobile phone market has grown significantly in recent years. ComReg’s key quarterly data report document 07/34, indicates that there were over 4.7 million mobile subscribers at the end of March 2007, with pre paid subscriptions accounting for 75% of all active mobile subscriptions. Mobile voice traffic in Q4 2006 exceeded 2 billion minutes for the first time in the Irish mobile market and the number of SMS messages sent in the quarter was 1.64 billion messages.

As with the fixed line market, mobile phone operators are required to comply with the regulations set down for providers of electronic communications in the areas of tariff transparency, complaint handling, directory listings and contracts.
