{"id":108978,"date":"2019-07-11T15:59:26","date_gmt":"2019-07-11T15:59:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.comreg.ie\/?p=108978"},"modified":"2019-07-30T11:11:29","modified_gmt":"2019-07-30T11:11:29","slug":"roaming-outside-the-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.comreg.ie\/ga\/roaming-outside-the-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"Roaming outside the EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It can be significantly more expensive to use your mobile phone outside the EU.\u00a0 However, you can minimise your costs by choosing the best options before you leave home.<\/p>\n<p>Roaming costs vary for different countries.\u00a0 Before you travel, check the roaming costs for the country you are visiting with your mobile provider.\u00a0 These rates can be expensive, but you can reduce costs by making only essential calls and using data (for example social media and the internet) in free Wi-Fi zones.<\/p>\n<p>Ask your mobile provider at home which mobile network will give you the cheapest roaming rates in each country outside the EU that you are visiting.\u00a0 You can then manually choose this one when your phone gives you a list of available networks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What alerts can I expect to receive when roaming outside the EU?<\/h3>\n<p>If you travel outside the EU you should receive a \u2018data usage alert\u2019 on your phone while travelling.\u00a0 However, sometimes your home mobile provider cannot send this alert to the country you are visiting.\u00a0 In these circumstances, you should receive a text message advising you that the data usage alert cannot be sent while you are roaming in that country.\u00a0 You should be careful to manage how you use your phone as you will be responsible for the resulting bill.<\/p>\n<p>When your mobile provider can send you an alert, you can expect to receive two text messages:<\/p>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-65\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-65\">\n<tbody class=\"row-striping row-hover\">\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Text 1<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">Message telling you when you have spent \u20ac49.20 \u2013 80% of \u20ac61.50 (including VAT)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Text 2<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">Message telling you when you have spent \u20ac61.50 (including VAT)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-65 from cache -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Once you have received the alerts at 80% and 100% of this limit, you must opt-in to continue using data services.<\/p>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-66\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-66\">\n<tbody class=\"row-striping row-hover\">\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">WARNING<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">You should be aware that there may be a time delay before you receive the data usage alert. So you may have already spent \u20ac61.50 before you receive the alert.  Your mobile provider does not have to continue to alert you about how much you are spending.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nAlso, be aware that these alerts relate to data usage only and do not include any other roaming usage such as calls or text messages.<br \/>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-66 from cache -->\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>How else can I manage my roaming costs?<\/h3>\n<p>Some mobile providers offer roaming packages that are tailored for travel outside the EU.
