
The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) today released its Quarterly Key Data Report on the Electronic Communications market for the period 1 January to 31 March, Q1 2025.
Fixed broadband subscriber lines increased to 1.70 million, an increase of 2.7% compared to Q1 2024. Of these, 908,886 were fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) subscriber lines representing 53% of total fixed broadband subscriber lines in Q1 2025, up from 43% in Q1 2024.
ComReg also today published an Open Data Map Hub with an interactive application to show Coverage and Take-Up of Gigabit Broadband (FTTP and Cable) by county across Ireland.
FTTP is the most purchased broadband technology and is available at 76% of all premises in Ireland. Gigabit broadband is available at 86% of all premises in Ireland. In terms of FTTP take up, 50% of all premises with FTTP available had an active FTTP service at the end of Q1 2025. The counties with the highest level of FTTP coverage are Laois, Longford and Westmeath at 92%. Westmeath has the highest level of Gigabit coverage at 94%. Leitrim has the fastest growing FTTP coverage within the last year, with a 33-percentage point increase in FTTP coverage compared to Q1 2024.
On a monthly basis, an average residential fixed broadband subscriber line used 503.8 GB of data, an increase of 17% since Q1 2024. Businesses have used 345.4 GB of data, an increase of 17% compared to Q1 2024.
In Q1 2025, approximately 67% of fixed broadband subscriber lines had purchased broadband with speeds equal to or greater than 500Mbps, up from 47% in Q1 2024, while 19% purchasing broadband speeds equal to or greater than 1Gbps. Of the 908,886 FTTP subscriber lines, 93% have broadband speeds equal to or greater than 500 Mbps.
Total mobile subscriptions (including mobile broadband and machine-to-machine (M2M)) increased to 10.4 million in Q1 2025 – driven by a rise in bill pay subscriptions which represent 77% of all mobile subscriptions. 5G subscribers increased to 2.1 million in Q1 2025, an increase of 32% since Q1 2024.
On a monthly basis an average mobile voice subscriber used 155 minutes (1% annual decrease), sent 33 texts (4% annual decrease), and used 18.8GB of data (0.68% annual increase).
