Vodafone Ireland has announced the launch of Real-Time Text (RTT) in Ireland.
RTT is a new service which adds a text channel alongside a mobile voice call. The text is transmitted instantly, over a voice call channel, displaying each character on the other person’s screen as it is typed. RTT allows users to read text instantly as it is being entered, creating a real-time conversational experience. It is particularly useful for deaf, hard-of-hearing, or speech-impaired users.
Vodafone Ireland is the first mobile operator in Ireland to introduce RTT. The launch coincides with the implementation of the European Accessibility Act last .
This initiative enhances emergency communication by building on a pilot program launched in January 2025, the first operational native RTT service in Europe, that allows voice-based RTT without the need for users to pre-register or download an app. It enables 112/999 users to communicate with greater immediacy during emergencies. It can also be used in person-to-person calls.
