Real-Time Text (RTT) is a feature available on many mobile devices and mobile networks which allows you to communicate with text during a phone call and works with a teletypewriter (TTP). RTT does not require any additional mobile accessories.
Under the European Accessibility Act, mobile service providers are required to have this service enabled for all users since 28 June 2025, ensuring that everyone, including persons with disabilities, can fully participate in the digital economy and everyday life without barriers.
Some helpful information about RTT:
- Unlike with chat messaging, the text that you enter appears for the other person in real time, letter by letter. For example, if you make a mistake and then delete it, the other person can see the original text being typed and erased in real time
- RTT calls include an audio channel. You can mute or un-mute your microphone
- You can use RTT to call emergency services or another Irish mobile user if the device and network supports it. Making an RTT call to business numbers will also depend on the readiness of those businesses for RTT calls. RTT may not be available when roaming abroad – check with your service provider for more details
