There is a risk of fire that can occur when tumble dryers are not maintained or used correctly. ComReg is seeking to raise awareness as part of its Radio Equipment Directive Market Surveillance Authority role in protecting the health and safety of persons, domestic animals, and property.
ComReg recommends that you follow the advice below to ensure you are using your tumble dryer safely:
- Always register a new appliance with the manufacturer so you receive up-to-date information on any potential issues that may cause a safety hazard. You can usually register your contact information with the store in which you buy the product.
- Ensure that you read all safety information and warnings contained in the instruction manual before using the machine for the first time.
- Lint and fluff should be cleaned out from the filter and from around the door after every use.
- Keep an eye out for fibre, dust, and dirt accumulating around the exhaust exit and surrounding areas, and clean these areas often.
- Do not attempt to tumble dry unwashed items, such as rain-soaked clothes, as these items may have come into contact with flammable chemicals.
- Do not stop the dryer before the drying cycle has completed, including the ‘cool down’ cycle. If you need to interrupt the drying cycle, quickly remove all items and leave the door open to allow the appliance to cool down.
- Whenever possible, unplug the appliance overnight and when leaving the house to avoid the risk of an electrical fault causing a fire.
- Never allow children to operate the appliance.
- Ensure the appliance is situated in an area where there is adequate ventilation, and never place a tumble dryer on a carpet-covered floor. This will help to prevent overheating.
- Never use extension cords, adaptors, or multi-plugs to connect your appliance to a power supply, as doing so increases the potential for electric shock and fire.
